Australian house prices have long been a talking point around the weekend BBQ. The following article was written by Dr Shane Oliver in response to recent activity and analysis on house prices across the country, which you may find of interest.

Key points of the article:
  • Property prices in Sydney and Melbourne are likely to see top to bottom falls of around 20% as credit conditions tighten, supply rises and a negative feedback loop from falling prices risks developing.
  • Other cities will perform better having not seen the boom of the last few years.
  • Property investors should remain wary of Sydney and Melbourne for now & focus on higher yielding markets.

By the standards of recent years, 2017 was relatively quiet. Sure there was the usual “worry list” – about Trump, elections in Europe, China as always, North Korea and nuclear war and the perennial property crash in Australia. And there was a mania in bitcoin. But overall it has been pretty positive for investors.

As we approach the end of 2017 and start to look into 2018, we review what happened in markets over the year and what we anticipate will be the themes and issues in 2018. .

As always, in seeking professional advice, investment of funds is only one aspect of any financial plan and a focus on structure and strategy can have an even more significant benefit.

Trump Elected 45th President of the US

A remarkable day for America with the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States – an outcome that few predicted and a scenario that seemed impossible just a few short months ago. Understandably, global markets were exceptionally volatile during today’s trading with the US FUTURES driving markets around the world on the day, but a subsequent recovery.
A lot of volatility beneath the surface but in aggregate, the market is actually up +2.5% for the week. A remarkable effort really and now focus is clearly on what the economic ramifications of a Trump presidency might be.
The most obvious question now is, what will a Trump presidency look like, and how will the cards settle going forward?
In the attached article, we look at the economic implications of the election and what this means for markets and you.
We often get the question, what action should I take or am I in the right portfolio in accordance with my strategy? If you would like to discuss the implications in relation to your long term strategy, please contact our office on 03 9846 1099 or [email protected]
